BY DEAN GREENAWAY
Edwin, Parillon helping teams to basketball victories
Kent State University Golden Flashers junior Jason Edwin and Henderson
State Reddies senior Steve Parillon helped their respective teams to
weekend victories. Edwin had 13 points and seven rebounds in the Golden
Flashers 76-61 victory over Central Michigan on Saturday. Kent State, 16-3
overall and 10-1 in the Mid American Conference, pulled away from a one
point halftime lead by outscoring Central Michigan 42-26 after intermission.
In their previous game, Kent State survived conference foe Northern
Illinois University's late rally to hold on for a 69-67 victory on Feb. 4,
their 10th win in their last 11 games. Edwin was held to three points in 22
minutes of play.
Against the University of Akron, Edwin tied the game at 35-35 with a lay up
and finished with 17 points, in a 77-66 victory. In one of his best games
of the season Edwin tied for the scoring lead with a game-high with 20
points, which tied his career-best, hitting on 7-of-11 attempts, in a 92-56
triumph against the University of Toledo. Meanwhile, Henderson State
overcame a 16-point first half deficit to beat Southern Arkansas 77-64, on
Monday in Gulf South Conference play. The Reddies, 18-4 overall and 9-2 in
the Gulf South Conference play, got 24 points and 11 rebounds from Parillon.
Cedar Sharks stop Willard Wheatley Wolves 4-1.
Defending champions and hosts Cedar Sharks beat the Willard Wheatley Wolves
4-1 in Primary Schools Soccer action last Thursday in a rematch of the 2003
championship series. Primary Schools League Golden Boot winner George Faye
who swapped the green of Montessori for the all-white of Cedar, made his
debut for the Sharks and bagged two goals, one that saw him duck in for a
header that almost had his head knocked off. Alec Anderson had already
given Cedar the lead with an excellent back-post header.
Goals from Faye and Mark Krowel made it 4-0 over the subdued Wolves who got
good performance from goalie Davis Vanterpool to keep the score
respectable. Jomah Turnbull scored a consolation goal for the Wolves in
Shark's 4-1.
Women's Football league opens on Sunday
The BVI Football Association 11-A-Side Ladies League kicks off at 5 pm.
Sunday at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. The three team league will
have a brief opening
ceremony followed by the first match between Seven-Eleven and HBA Panthers.
While it is disappointing to only have three teams, the BVIFA feels it is
important to show a strong commitment to the development of women's
football and hopefully a successful 11-a-side league will encourage other
ladies to come out and play. Besides the Panthers and Seven-Eleven, the
league includes U-19. The schedule is as follows: Sun, 15 Feb, Seven-Eleven
vs HBA Panthers. Tues, 17 Feb, HBA Panthers vs U-19. Thurs,19 Feb, U-19 vs
