BVI meeting St. Martin in weekend tune up match for St. Lucia
BY DEAN GREENAWAY
Following two losses to Dominica and a victory over the U. S. Virgin
Islands, the BVI will meet St. Martin this weekend in another tune up game
for its Feb. 22 World Cup qualifying match against St. Lucia.
Coach Michael Tulloch said the team needs to be more disciplined and play
to the formation and instructions given. He said the team will learn from
the mistakes. During the week, he said the plan was to work on marking.
"The marking was poor in the latter stages of the game (against Dominica)
and we allowed the players to be roaming all over the field and the
discipline and concentration went," Tulloch explained. "The fitness level
was not where I wanted it to be to play for 90 minutes so I would be trying
to get them a lot fitter."
Tulloch said he's familiar with St. Martin from friendly matches they
played against Jamaica. St. Martin he said plays at a high level and they
are a stronger team than Dominica. "I'll be taking that experience that I
have from them playing in Jamaica into this game and I won't be taking them
lightly. We have to play with a lot more discipline if we are to match them
in St. Martin."
Because the team has been working on fitness and not much technical work,
Tulloch said they lack shooting power. He said the forwards don't take
enough shots at goal. "If you don't shoot, you cannot score," he noted.
"Finishing has been one of our problems in the first three games, but, we
have only been in training for three weeks and concentrating on the
physical. Now we will have to get into some technical areas."
The 20 man traveling squad includes: Avondle Williams, captain; Monty
Butler, vice captain; Roger Alexander, Ronalie Caines, Noel Issacs, Troy
Williams, Jairo Morris, Kenmore Simmons, Merrick Savage, Rohan Lennon, Alex
Green, Ron Parris, Dowlyn Daly, Fitzroy Thomas, Tyrone Noble, Coy Robinson,
Garnet Ferron, Alessandro Palladino, Quavier Roach and Shurlan Charles.
