Virgin Gorda Mystics turn back Latinos 91-88 in overtime

Virgin Gorda Mystics stayed unbeaten in the BVI Big Ballers league at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town over the weekend, but needed a 91-88 overtime victory against the Latinos to do so.

Latinos’ Andy Ramirez—who had 22 of his game high 45 points in the second and third quarters—hit a 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds left to send the game into overtime tied at 79-79. The 3-0 Mystics were behind most of the game, had their first lead midway through the fourth quarter after trailing 40-39 at the half. However, they were only 17 of 41 from the free throw line to keep the Latinos—17 of 26—in the game.

Mystics’ Devon Watts scored nine of his team high 20 points in the fourth quarter. He also had 15 rebounds. Garvin Stevens added 19 and seven rebounds—but was only 3 for 8 at the line. Gary ‘The Glove’ Hillhouse tossed in 12 points along with eight rebounds, seven steals and six assists. Yeimi Soriano and Alexi Manuel had 11 and 10 points respectively for the Latinos.

Travis Issac had a triple double in leading the Jr. Mystics to an 84-66 triumph over Squad Up. Issac had a game high 31 points to go with 13 steals and 10 boards. He also dished out five assists. Tristin Creque missed a double double with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Junior Fredericks added 12. Kareem Scatliffe and Jerome Barnes had Squad Up’s leading scores with 27 and 16 points.

Off De Chainz beat the Guns 92-78 behind Roger Farrington’s 28 points. Alfred Greenaway and Dalvern Blyden chipped in 17 and 16 respectively. Greenaway also had 10 rebounds.

Peter McDowell had 25 points and Dennis Hogan added 24, as Pure Playaz whipped Nuttin 2 Do 103-53. McDowell also pulled 12 rebounds. Sheldon Matthew and Claudio Ortega contributed 16 points each. Jason Fonseca led Nuttin 2 Do with 18 points. Aldric Lanns and Keon Edwards poured in 15 and 13 points a piece.

Run It Red overcame the HLSCC Stingrays 102-99 with clutch shots at the free throw line in the last minute of the game, after trailing 59-40 at halftime. Duron Phillips and Kelvin Samuels led Run It Red with 28 and 24 points each. Phillips also grabbed 16 off the glass. Kelvin Solomon and Akeem Titley added 14 points for Run It Red. The Stingrays got 26 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and five steals from McKenzie Baltimore. Dwight Brookes and David Souzana had 23 and 16 points each, with 10 and 11 rebounds respectively.

The Hawkeyes beat Millennium 92-72 for their first victory. William ‘Ice Willy’ Penn led Hawkeyes with 34 points. Akim Moses finished with a 24 point 12 rebound double double. Terry ‘Federal’ Turnbull had 18 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Akiba Forde led Millennium with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Neville ‘Sheep’ Smith and Allan Baptiste added 22 and 11 points each.  On Sunday, Devon Smith had 23 points as the Disciples rebounded from its first lost by beating All On Da Line 113-72. Halstead Chiverton and Ronford Todman scored 16 points each for the Disciples, coming off a mid-week 85-73 loss to All Ah We. Delon Mills and Kenneth Heilliger were All On Da Line leading scorers with 14 and 12 points respectively.  “I’m glad for this win. It was a very important to the team that we must win this one especially,” said Disciples coach Verne ‘Bego’ Trunbull, who saw his team holding a 60-35 halftime edge. “This time we played like a team. A lot more passing, everybody felt more comfortable and everybody was able to score some points. Our team is starting to come together and if any difficult teams come by we’ll be ready to play them.”

All Ah We smothered the Apostles 114-47, after bolting to a 61-22 at the halft. The Apostles committed numerous turnovers and were just 6 of 20 from the free throw line. Nathaniel Malone had 19 points as the top scorer for All Ah We. He also dished out five assists. Lyle Duggins and Shevron Reeft tossed in 17 and 16 points respectively, while Edred Stout contributed 14 and pulled 10 rebounds. Nicholas Laurac finished with 11 points and eight rebounds for the Apostles. Elton Charles chipped in 10.

Travis Issac had a 24 point and 24 rebound double double in leading the Jr. East Rockers to their third straight victory, a 96-73 triumph over the Bulldogs. Garvin Frett finished with 19 points, while Leslie Smith had a 16 point 21 rebound double double. T’Shaun Henley had a game high 25 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bulldogs’ scores. Kyle Scatliffe added 22 points and 10 boards.
