Blue Chips await opponent for Softball title as Hawks draw Lady Braves

 With the women’s championships series decided, the BVI Amateur Softball Association could possibly have its men’s match up as early as Friday night in time for their championship series to begin on Sunday.

Athina Maduro got the victory over Daphne Frett in the Hawks’ 13-3 victory over the Lady Braves last Wednesday, when they won they tied the series at 1-1. Laligue Gumbs and Shanika Brawithe each went 2 for 3 to lead the Hawks’ hitters. Bratwaithe scored on run and had two batted in, while Gumgs scored one and drove in one. Alma Maduro had one hit in three at bats, scored two and finished with 3RBIs. Lady Braves’ Kishma Payne was 1 for 2, scored once and drove in one. Jurine George had one hit in tree at bats and one run batted in. Line score: Hawks 13R 9 H 1 E 5 left on base. Lady Braves 3R 3H 4E 6 stranded.

The Hawks wrapped up the series on Saturday during an 11-9 slugfest with Lady Braves.

Athina Maduro came on in relief of Elita Parker in the third to collect the victory while Pearline Scatliffe took the loss. Hawks’ Michelle George had a 3 for 3 game with 2 run scored and 2 RBIs. Alma Maduro finished 2 for 3 and scored once, while Veronica Christopher had a hit in two at bats and 2 runs batted in. The Lady Braves’ leading hitters were Kishma Payne who went 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and one run batted in; Scatliffe

1 for 3 and an RBI; Carlene Scatliffe 2 for 4 and a run batted in. Line score: Hawks 11R 9H 5E 9 left on base. Lady Braves 9H 3E 5 left on base.

Neville ‘Sheep’ Smith fanned 14 and settled for a 3-hitter, as the Blue Chips completed a series sweep of the Byrds with a 7-6 victory. Reynaldo ‘Jack’ Hodge took the loss. Top hitters; Brent Herbert 2 for 4, 1 run scored. Byron Parsons, 1 for 3, 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. Shawn Martin 1 for 3, 1 run scored 2 runs batted in. Sylvester ‘Bucket’ Johnson was 2 for 4 with 3 run scored and one batted in as the Byrds’ top hitter. Line score: Blue Chips 7R 8H 4E 4 left on base. Byrds 6R 5H 3E 4 left on base.

After losing the opener, the Blue Wings have taken command of their series with the Pirates, with victories on Friday and Sunday. Raymond ‘Mahasa’ Mercer struck out eight as the Blue Wings evened the series with an 8-6 Friday night victory. Allen ‘Woodrow’ Smith took the loss.

David ‘Archie’ Maduro led the Blue Wings’ attack by going 3 for 4, scoring one and driving in 2. Alfred Maduro had 2 RBIs on a 2 for 4 game with one run scored.

Brian ‘Matcher’ Fahie finished 2 for 3, scored one with 3 runs batted in, including a 2-run homer in the 5th inning. Pirates’ Melvin ‘Jah Mouth’ Christopher was their leading hitter. He was 2 for 3, scored 3 with 2 RBIs including a 2-run 6th inning homer. Line Score: Blue Wings 8R 10H 5E 6 left on base. Pirates 6R 6H 7E 3 runs stranded.

Mercer and Smith hooked up again on Sunday, as he limited Smith and the Pirated to two hits in a 6-1 victory for the Blue Wings’ 2-1 series lead heading into Friday’s must win game for the Pirates. Mercer fanned five while Smith struck out eight. David ‘Archie’ Maduro continued swinging a hot bat with another 3 for 4 game. He also scored once. Alfred Maduro went 2 for 3 and scored 2, while Andre ‘Shabba’ Pickering had 2 hits in 4 at bats with one run batted in. Pirates’ Eddie Fahie finished one for three with a run batted in. Line score: Blue Wings 6R 11H 2E 9 left on base. Pirates 1R 2H 2E 2 left on base.

A Blue Wings victory on Friday will send them to defend their title against the Blue Chips. The Pirates vs Blue Wings match up is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on Friday after the women’s championship series.
