Rivals beat Liat Stars by seven wickets in BVI Cricket league action

BY DEAN GREENAWAY

In the lone game played in the second weekend of the BVI Cricket Association league at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds on Sunday, Rivals secured a convincing seven wicket victory over Liat Stars. The week old league had its first forfeiture when Cay Sports failed to field a team to face the Police squad.

With Liat Stars fielding 10 players only, Englore Liburd ploughed through the order to bag five wickets as they were bowled out for a paltry 91 runs. Glanville Brown resisted long enough and had a top score of 23. Barath Lamothe and Mervin LaTouche contributed another 16 and 14 runs respectively.

In seven overs work, Liburd bagged 5 for 20, while Jerome Periera took 3 for 26 off 6.4 overs.

In their reply, Monty Butler missed a half century in helping to guide Rivals to 93 for 3 for a comfortable seven wicket win. Butler had and unbeaten 41 including seven boundaries, before being caught by Marcus Bulter off the bowling of Otis Meyers. Lynden Benjamin contributed a supporting 16. Meyers only bowled one over but bagged 2 for 15. Lamothe took 1 for 29 off four overs.

Defending champions Cavaliers, who beat East End in their opener last weekend, will face Cay Sports at noon on Saturday, while East End the Under 19 Youth team will square off also at noon on Sunday.
