Tennis champ Dion Anslem
loses in OECS Nations Cup
BVI Closed Tennis champion Dion Anslem participated
debuted in the recent OECS Nations Cup in St. Lucia in mid March. The Cup served
as a regional tournament between the top players of OECS member states and to
help select the OECS Davis Cup Team which will represent the region at the BNP
Paribas Davis Cup (American Region Group IV Events) in Costa Rica later this
year.
Anslem succumbed the OECS’ number one player, St.
Lucia’s Vernon Lewis in straight sets 6-0 and 6-0. He also lost to Jimmy Brown
of Grenada 6-1, 6-3. Selected to the OECS Davis Cup team are: Kirsten Cable,
St. Kitts. Glynn James and Corey Huggins, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and
Hayden Ashton , Grenada. At a special general meeting of the OECS Tennis
Association, BVI Lawn Tennis Association president Henry Creque was elected to
the as Vice President.
Virgin Gorda baseball teams suffers rare loss
All three Virgin Gorda teams suffered defeats on
Saturday in the BVI Little League Baseball Association’s Dean Greenaway
league-something that rarely happens.
In the 6-8 year old division coach pitch game, the
Belle Vue Depositors scored seven in the first and nine in the third to beat the
Virgin Gorda’s Yates Yankees 19-8. Joseph Smith homered twice in three at bats,
scored three times and had 6 RBIs, to lead the Depositors. Kareel Parsons fired
a two-hitter as the Sandcastle Red Sox pummeled the Virgin Gorda Blue Jays 17-1.
Parsons fanned seven for the victory. In senior division play, the Diamondbacks
whipped Virgin Gorda’s Smiths Ferries Rockies 8-1. Devon Stanley settled for a
2-hitter while fanning seven Rockies batsmen for the victory. Chayne DeFrietas
who was tagged with the loss, was relieved by Travis Issac and Junior Frederick.
The Virgin Gorda trio contributed to their demise by walking 11 Diamondbacks
batters. In junior girls’ softball, the ATC Trustees Mets scored eight in the
second to overhaul the Royals’ 5-0 lead then hanged on for an 11-9 victory. The
HWR Expo Chicks improved to 4-0 in senior division play, following an 11-1
victory over the BVI Spring Twins. Valissa Brathwaite got the win and Wanda
Blyden took the loss. Sheroma and sister Shamora Penn were 2 for 3 respectively
with two and one runs batted in.
Leeward Islands trials meet on Saturday
The BVI Amateur Athletics Association will hold two
trial meets to select athletes for upcoming Leeward Islands competitions in St.
Kitts and Antigua. The association will hold trials at 9 a.m. on April 3 and 17
at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds to select its youth and Jr. Leeward
Islands teams. The Youth meet is scheduled for St. Kitts, April 25-26 while the
Leeward Islands Jr. Championships are set for Antigua May 15-16. Saturday’s
events include 100, 400 and 1500 meters, Long Jump, Shot Put and Javelin.
Ludence Smith fourth in 800 meters
Half miler Ludence Smith was fourth in the 800
meters on Friday at the Knights of Columbus meet held at Glendale Community
College in Arizona. Smith finished the event in 2 minutes, 00.23 seconds then
contributed a 49 seconds split on the third place 4 x 400 meter relay. Aliston
‘Al Potter ran third leg on the second placed 4 x 100 meter relay that ran 42.93
seconds. Injuries kept Kevin Fahie out of competition.
