Ice Connection wins first Summer Jam League championship

BY DEAN GREENAWAY

William 'Ice Willy' Penn was so confident that Ice Connection would win its first Summer Jam Basketball League title on Virgin Gorda with a victory over Jam Squad last Friday, that he came to Tortola to collect custom made T-shirts and cases of champagne.

He didn't have to wait the full game to celebrate against his brother Franklyn 'Rasta' Penn and Jam Squad. Trailing by 32 with 5:28 left in the first half, Franklyn lost his cool and threw the ball over the wall after disagreeing with a call. He then threw water on the court with his team railing 49-28 in the first half, as Jam Squad quit in frustration. "We worked hard throughout the whole regular season and no one expected us to be here," William said. "Jam Squad beat us during the regular season and they were all excited and figured they would win it. But, we stepped it up, played ball and won the championship. This championship means a lot." William and David 'Bolo' Lettsome had 12 points each for Ice Connection when the game was aborted. Ronnie 'Gola' Simmonds also had 12 points for Jam Squad.

Cronics set up a deciding game on Friday in their 'B' division series with Pure Playaz, after hanging on to win 86-84. Pure Playaz outscored Cronics 25-13 in the third quarter to get back into the game after trailing 48-35 at the half. Nathaniel Malone led all Cronics scores with 39 points. He also had 11 rebounds and six assists. Mckenzie Baltimore chipped in 18, while Dalvern Blyden finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Leando Creque was Pure Playaz's leading scorer with 26 points. Travis Creque added 18. Pure Playaz were coming off a 65-50 victory when they took a 2-1 series lead. Jevon Demming scored 34 of his game high 42 points in the second half as the Starz erased an eight point halftime deficit by outscoring Young Gunz 59-45 in the second half to complete their 'C' division sweep with a 90-84 victory. Lee Evans Jacobs added 38 points, pulled 12 rebounds and dished out seven assists. Dewayne George led Young Gunz with 25 points and eight rebounds. Coy Dore and Radley Stevens chipped in 24 and 22 points each and grabbed nine boards respectively.
