Old Madrid dominate Veterans in BVI Football Association match up
BY DEAN GREENAWAY
Old Madrid dominated the Veterans Sunday in the BVI Football Association's first full week of action by capitalizing on defensive blunders for a 2-1 victory.
"From the beginning of the game, we dominated play and the results showed that we are the better team," Old Madrid's coach Howard Stephens said. "After we went up 1-0, we began playing more a more defensive game. We know that Veterans are the type of team that when they fall behind, they'd try to take the game to us. So we waited until they brought the game to us."
Kenmore Simmons gave Old Madrid a 1-0 lead just before halftime, when he beat a Veterans defensive player and caught goalie Monty Butler out of position. Both teams missed second half scoring on penalty opportunities. With Butler moving from his position and entering Old Madrid's half of the field as an extra player on corner kicks, Simmonds was able to beat Veterans defense in the 89th minute as he lobbed a shot from 55 yards out that went straight to the unmanned goal. One minute later, Veterans avoided a shut out when Andy Andrews scored off a deflection from a left corner kick.
"Monty always plays out of position when the team falls behind," Veterans coach Moses Phipps noted. "He always gets stranded in the game and feels he can always go down and do what he wants. But, we have to address that." Phipps said his team which only had two practices is not together as yet. "My defense was playing a little weak and my power forward left the game because of injury and that was one of our major breakdowns," Phipps explained.
The Virgin Program Wolves built a 2-0 lead over the HBA Panthers then committed an own goal before losing 3-2. Peter Samuel scored four minutes into the game and John Bridgemen added a second goal in the 36th minute, for the 2-0 lead. Andy Leukrine's own goal in the 44th minute cut the deficit to 2-1 at halftime. The Panthers equalized the game in the 63rd minute on Kevin Liburd's goal and won when Mondale Questeles beat the Wolves defense in the 77th minute.
Virgin Gorda dominated the first half then hanged on to beat future Stars 3-2. Tyrone Noble pushed one past the Future Stars goalkeeper in the ninth minute then Jairo Morris added a second goal 11 minutes later as Virgin Gorda held a 2-0 halftime lead.
Virgin Gorda began playing a conservative defensive second half game while Future Stars attacked. Brian Griffith finally scored in the 70th minute then eleven minutes later McTain James scored the equalizing goal. Charles Fredericks ended Virgin Gorda's second half drought scoring in the 88th minute for the victory.
