BVI Rugby team takes down English
Law Society 33-17
The BVI Rugby Football Club raced to
a 21-0 halftime lead in its season opener to beat a touring English
Law Society XV 33-17 Friday. Five tries allowed the hosts to run out
winners in a fierce battle that produced some scintillating rugby
and dogged defense. Right winger Roger Carter broke free down the
line and as he was being closed down managed to get the pass away to
centre Dave Palgrave who beat the covering defense to the line.
Johan Terblanche then converted for the extra two points. The
BVI’s second try came 20 meters from the Law Society line. A quick
pick up by captain Damian Pearson gave Terblanche and Palgrave the
momentum to breach the Law Society line. Debut scrum-half Casper
Inson was on hand to exploit the space and go over for his first try
for the BVI. A breakaway by Vic Franklin on the left wing and a pass
to Andrew Simmons gave him a touch down for his first try of the
season. Terblanche then extended the BVI’s lead to 21-0 at
half-time. Law Society Centre Ibrahim Clark took advantage of some
indecisive defense in the BVI ranks and raced away for a try which
was converted by fly-half Scott Robinson. Captain and scrum-half
Fred Robinson capitalized on the BVI’s failure to clear the ball
and Robinson converting once more, they were within seven points of
their hosts. The BVI took up the mantle once more and set up some
good positions in the Law Society half. From a scrum midway in the
half, Terblanche and Elliott put full back Simon Filmer in the clear
to cross the line to add the cushion of five more points. Second row
Bob Milne, pounced on a loose ball close to the line to barge his
way over. This was soon followed by Terblanche exploiting a gap in
the Law Society defense to put the icing on the BVI’s cake in the
33-17 victory.
