DION ANSELM

BY DEAN GREENAWAY

Second seeded Dion Anselm overpowered surprise finalist Ken Adamsonwho ousted top seeded Percy Rhoden6-1, 6-2 for his first BVI Closed Tennis Championships men’s title at the Tortola Sports Club Saturday, while new comer Ruth Dalton beat Heather Chapman.
“It was a great game and I played my best Tennis,” Anselm a former BVI Open B singles champ said. Anselm beat Ray McDonald 6-0 and 6-2 in his fist match then got an easy walk over of Martin Alexis who retired down 4-0 in the second set after losing the opener 6-3. Anselm advanced to the finals after beating Peter Poole 6-3 and 6-4.
Following his win over Poole, Anselm said one of his biggest threats was Rhoden. “But Ken took him down,” Anselm said. “I was surprised to meet Ken because I thought I’d meet Percy in the finals. Percy knows my game and he has a better game than mine and it would have been much more difficult to beat him.”
Adamson said he’s always hoped to get to the finals. “The older you get the nicer it is to get to the finals and I was very pleased with the results,” the oldest player in the tournament said, noting it was the first time he had beaten Rhoden in some years. “We used to have great game several years ago and split some of them, but it’s the first time I’ve beaten him in a long time,” Adamson recalled. “I think I had a couple lucky shots just at the right timetwo service breaks one in each set. You either get the luck or you don’t get the luck.” Adamson said Anselm just overpowered him in the final. “I’ve never seen him play so well. He was just awesome. He was serving very well, coming to the net and clipping the first volley. Congratulations to Dion, he really played well.”
Anselm said his secret is consistent practicing by going on the court and doing what’s there to be done to get better. “I think those guys sit back and relax,” he noted of his opponents. “When you can get out there spending some time practicing your serves, backhand and forehand, it really makes the difference when you are in a tournament and building up your confidence.”
Dalton beat Chapman 6-1, 6-2 for the title, after turning back Sue Sorrentino 6-3 and 6-2 and Simone Martin 6-0 and 6-0. “Heather didn’t give up easily and I don’t think the score reflects the game. I think she played very hard and each point was hard fought,” Dalton explained. “I’m new to the island and thought it would be a good way to introduce myself into the tennis scene, and the club. It was quite unexpected getting this far and playing Heather.”
