Eric Mathias wins Discus at Arizona quadrangular

Eric ‘Shaq’ Mathias followed up last week’s qualifier for the National Junior College Championships by piercing the 170 foot barrier in the Discus for the second time. The Central Arizona College sophomore won the competition at the quadrangular competition that included Phoenix, Pima and Gateway Community College, with a throw of 52.27 meters, 171’5”. His best is 172’1”. He was fifth in the Shot Put with a heave of 13.50 meters, 44’3½”.Teammates Kevin Fahie and Ludence Smith were fourth and ninth in the 200 and 800 meters respectively. Fahie ran the duce in 22.4 seconds, while Smith covered the half in 2 minutes 09.9 seconds. Fahie and Smith started and anchored the ‘C’ 4 x 400 meter relay team that ran 3:25.6. Fahie led off with 51.3 while Smith anchored with a 51.2 carry. Central Arizona won the competition with 244.5 pts. Pima CC amassed 157. Phoenix CC 84.5 and Gateway CC 22.Their next meet is the Bill Sawyer Invitational in Tempe on March 8.

Lewis and Lawrence compete at conference championships

Sherisma Lawrence and Tahirah Lewis helped Coppin State to an eight place finish in the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on the weekend. Lawrence had a two feet improvement in the Long Jump with her leap of 4.83 meters (15’10¼”) in fifth place. Lewis was eight in the Shot Put with a throw of 11.24 meters (36’10¼”).

Kennedy Bass beats buzzer in Clinton’s 69-68 victory

Kennedy Bass had the game winning shot Sunday with 8.5 seconds left then came up with a blocked shot with 2 seconds left, before teammate Halstead J.R. Chiverton broke up a play at the Buzzer as Clinton Community College beat Waldof 69-68. Bass finished with 19 points and Chiverton nine.

Wildcats demolish Mariners II 18-0 in baseball

Carlos Maynard fired a 2-hitter as the Harney Westwood & Riegels Wildcats demolished the Mariners II, 18-0 in Little League Baseball play last Wednesday. Maynard helped his cause by going 2-3 with 3 RBIs. Raheem Blyden was 3-3, with 2 home runs and drove in 4. Kareem Profitt was the losing pitcher, with Damian Callwood pitching in relief. The Trident Trust Twins overcame the CCT Boatphone Expo Chics 17-14 for their second win of the season in the Eileene Parsons Girls Softball League. The Expo Chics led 12-7 through six innings before self destructing as the Twins came up with 4 in the 7th and 6 in the 8th to secure a hard fought victory. Twins Dianje Browne batted 4-4, including hitting 2 home runs and scoring 5 runs. Expo Chics Wendy Smith had a 2-run seventh inning homer.

Cycling Federation selects national team

The BVI Cycling Federation used a 60-mile Time Trial Sunday, to select cyclists for its national team. Some 14 people stared the race but only seven finished. Phillippe Leroy was the class of the field completing the race in 2 hours, 42 minutes and 11 seconds. 2. Jaron Maduro, 2:51.13. 3. Chris Ghiorse, 2:53.18. 4. Conrad ‘Manny’ Emmanuel, 3:04.42. 5. Andrew Young, 3:04.43. 6. Darel Christopher, 3:04.44. 7. Steve Marsh, 3:26.11. The first five finishers qualified for the team.
