WICKHAMS CAY INNER HARBOUR BEING IMPROVED

Government, in conjunction with Village Cay, will seek to undertake a
programme of maintenance at Wickhams Cay Inner Harbour and the area between the inner harbour entrance and the major docks, Chief Minister the
Honourable Ralph T. O'Neal announced Monday.

"Currently, the entrance outside the breakwater to the inner harbour buoy
marker is too shallow," he explained. He pointed out that the depth of the
harbour entrance has diminished over 50 per cent due to the construction
and operation of the cruise ship facility. He said it should not be less
than 18 feet to accommodate the mega yachts and luxury sailing vessels.
Two of the goals of the maintenance programme will be to improve water
quality and to provide greater accessibility, according to the Chief
Minister. He said the channel would be increased from depths of 8-11 feet
to 14-15 feet.

Work started in the third week of January and is expected to last for
approximately three weeks. Materials removed thus far include large pieces
of dead coral, discarded pipes and other large objects.
