Champions crowned as 2003 College Classic Series concludes
BY DEAN GREENAWAY

The curtains came down on the eight annual College Classic Series as the respective champions were crowned Saturday, in the 2003 series finale. Of six division titles at stake, only the Rotary Club of Road Town did not retain their title. They surrendered their Service Clubs Cross Country crown to their rivals the Rotary Club of Tortola.

The defending champs lost to the Rotary Club of Tortola who was more consistent in fielding a full squad for all five races. In Saturday's finale the Rotary Club of Tortola had their five scorers in the top 10, while Rotary Club of Road Town were short handed, fielding only four participants.

Inconsistency cost other titles too. "In several divisions although there might have been individuals that have ran faster times, at the end of the day consistency is what paid off," Assistant race director Stephanie Russ Penn noted. "A lot of people know that they might not have been the best in their division, but they came and ran for four or five races and in doing so, they are the ones who end up with the awards. What determines who gets an award is based on consistency."

Overall winner Linden Peters defended his title after winning the final race in 11 minutes, 17.98 seconds to go unbeaten. Nicholas Laurac and Jermaine Bryan were second and third respectively in 11:27.43 and 12:18.66. Darwn Peters who lost one race during the series, retained her overall crown after finishing in 13:47.57. Bianca Dougan and Maureen Peters followed in 14:30.50 and 14:38.47. Kesron Agard won the boy's one mile division in 7:08.53, while Yasmin Rufflesmith took the girls division in 8:56.01.

Despite challenging weather that affected the last three races and lowered attendance, Penn said the series was a success. "It was a great series and we had major camaraderie going on between the service clubs, primary schools and the BVI High School and the individual divisions," Penn noted. "We thank everyone who came out and participated in it and look forward to a greater series in 2004."
