Peters blister College Classic Series record

Darwn Peters threw her hands over her mouth in disbelief
then sighed on Saturday, after learning that she had shattered Linda
Ketchem’s 1998 HLSCC/Highland Spring College Classic Series record.
Her plan was to break the record-but not so soon. She had no choice.
Leann Polomann pushed her-hard.
“I actually expected to break it towards the end
of the series I really didn’t expect to do it today,” Peters said
after eclipsing Ketcham’s 14:18.7 mark with her 14:06.0 time, while
Polomann also bettered the previous standard with her 14:09.0.
“She gave me a tough fight,” Peters explained. “She
was in front of me, and then I caught up with her and started running
with her. On the way back, I tried to put some distance between
us, but, she was really good. Every time I tried to add a little
speed, she did the same-she was always there. She made me push myself
very hard.”
Following the September 22 race where she ran 15
minutes and 20.8 seconds, Peters set her eyes on the course record
and called race to inquire about the time and who held it.
Assistant race director Stephanie Russ Penn said
she wasn’t surprised of the time. “Darwn has the mental frame of
mind and the desire to go out and do really well,” Penn said. “She
certainly was pushed to do so today, so I’m not surprised at all.
I’m very happy for her.”
Linden Peters was the overall race winner in 12:19.3
with Zebalon McLean second in 12:20.8. In the Cross country segment,
Rotary Club of Road Town had three runners in the top five among
the service clubs, but only had four runners overall to their Rotary
Club of Tortola counterparts who field a full squad and claimed
full points.
Montessori school made their debut and with a full
team then grabbed second in the Primary Schools Cross Country behind
defending champions Althea Scatliffe. Despite the BVI High School
Carlisle House sweeping the top three places, they finished behind
Lincoln who fielded a full squad to collect full cross country points.
With each house winning one race, the November 2 race will be pivotal
for all teams who were short of personnel on Saturday as they chase
the title in their respective divisions.
