St.
George’s Honours four Longstanding Members
"Joy
and Wonder in all God's Works" that was the theme adopted for
the week of activities by The St. George's Church Women during their
Week of Activities from 6th to 12th October. On Sunday they attended
Services at St. George's, Monday they visited the sick and shut-in,
Tuesday they hosted a Spirit Filled Singspiration at the St.George's
Church, a number of choirs were invited to participate, they were:
Church of God of Prophecy, Huntums Ghut, women of Purpose, Moravian
Church Women, Mount Carmel Baptist, Purcell Methodist Women's League,
Belle Vue Women's League, Foggy Mountain Boys, Road Town Methodist
Women's League, St. Paul's E.C.W., Old Timers, St. George's Gospel
Choir and Carrot Bay Ladies. Mrs. Marriette Fahie was the Chairperson,
On Wednesday they had Sankie Night at St. Paul's in Sea Cow's Bay,
on Thursday they attended Bible Studies and On Saturday they hosted
a Testimonial Dinner.
The
St. George's Episcopal Church Women honoured four longstanding members
on Saturday 12th October at a Testimonial Dinner, held at Treasure
Isle Hotel, honourees were Mrs. Doris George, Mrs. Norma Williams,
Mrs. Allegra Pickering and Mrs. Sylvanita Hodge
Mrs. Doris George Nee Rymer was born on 6th November, 1926, the
fifth child of Marie and Stewart Rymer.She was the President of
the Episcopal Church Women's Group for over 25 years. On the 24th
of July, 1994 at All Saints Cathedral in St.Thomas she was presented
with the Bishop's Award for faithful Service to Our Lord Christ
and His Holy Church through the Episcopal Diocese of the Virgin
Islands, she is a devoted Church member and is happiest in the church
and now that sickness has taken over she relies on her Maker to
see her through. She is a member of the Lions Club and have served
as a Secretary, Tamer and Treasurer, and was the first President.
The highest honour of the Lions Club a Melvin Jones Fellow (MJF)
was bestowed upon Mrs George.
Uranica
Norma Williams (Miss Norma) was born on April 11, 1934 on the Island
of Nevis, the first child of Francis Burke and
Isaac Maynard, she was baptized at the St. James Anglican Church
in Nevis. At the age of 27 years she migrated to St. Thomas
and spent a short time there before moving to Tortola. On June 1,
1963 she was joined in marriage to former Police Charles Williams.
She is the mother of twelve children.
Mrs.
Williams became a follower of the Methodist faith. However, in 1965
she joined the St. George's Anglican Church and became an actiive
member in various church groups such as the E.C.W. She has especially
been faithful in being the person to offer prayers at various functions
of the church. Mrs Williams is also a member of the Ladies Club
and the Spiritual "Get Fit, Keep Fit Library" She continues
to be an active member in these groups as well as the church.
Mrs.
Alice Allegra Pickering nee Fahie, was born on Fort Hill, Tortola,
in 1927, she was the eighth child of the late Albert Ethelbert and
Emma Clothilda Fahie. Allegra or Tantie Leag, as she was affectionately
called was educated at St. George's Anglican Church where she was
baptized and later confirmed at the age of eighteen. The late Leonard
Ernest Pickering of Baugher's Bay was the lucky person to win this
lovely young lady's heart and took her hand in marriage on August
10, 1955. This union produced seven children. Mrs Pickering was
a member of the Mother 's Union and remain a member until its demise.
She became the official nurse of the family. She loves cooking,
baking and brewing the famous bush tea that Mr. Herbert so often
refers to during his morning devotion on ZBVI Radio Station. As
an active member of the ECW she participate in and contribute to
innumerable activities and functions put on for the benefit of the
church and its ministry.
Mrs
Sylvanita Skelton Hodge daughter of James Alfred and Lolita Fraser
Skelton was born on November 4, 1926. She is the sixth of eight
children. It was a tragedy when her mother died in 1937. This left
her along with her older siblings and extended family members to
care for the younger ones, from this however, she has gained an
appreciation for extended families and became very independent at
a very young age. Sylvanita is a true St. George's lady she was
baptized, schooled and confirmed at St. George's.
On July 16, 1942 she married Emmanuel Hodge of West End. Mrs Hodge
gave birth to thirteen children. She is known forpreparing the most
sumptous and mouth-watering dishes. She loves the Lord and serve
Him with her whole heart and will encourage everyone around her
to do the same.
Mrs
Margaret Borde, Mrs. Marlene Penn-Trotman, Mrs Gladys Scatliffe
and Mrs Myrthlyn Hodge presented the plaques to the honourees. The
welcome remarks were given by Mrs Yvonne McClean, the invocation
by Varona Maduro and the Guest Speaker was the Rev. Canon Ronald
Branche Rector of St. George's. Mr. Alred Frett provided soothing
and relaxing music, sometimes accompanied by the MC Mrs. Mariette
Fahie. The vote of thanks was given by Ms Carren Grant, which concludes
the end of a wonderful week of Joy and wonder in all God's Work.
