ROTARY LAUNCHES HENRY O. CREQUE EDUCATION TRUST
A fundraising gala banquet at The Moorings Mariner Inn last Saturday evening featuring popular Trinidadian comedian Paul Keens Douglas raised the initial funding for the newly established Henry Osmond Creque Educational Trust.
The Rotary Club of Tortola officially launched the fund during its April 11th meeting at the Treasure Isle Hotel. “Today represents a significant milestone in the history of the Rotary Club of Tortola and the Rotary movement in the British Virgin Islands,” said President Micheal Thomas.
He explained that the creation of this charitable trust is a brainchild of the late Henry O. Creque OBE, founding member and past President of the Rotary Club of Tortola. Mr. Creque was also the first Speaker of the Legislative Council and had a long and distinguished career in the public service.
The trust is intended to provide financial assistance to needy persons in the British Virgin Islands for the pursuit of higher education. The trust instrument provides for three trustees, all of whom must be members of the Rotary Club of Tortola. The Rotarians selected are current President Micheal and past presidents Gerard Farara and Audley Maduro.
The trust instrument also makes provision for a 7-person Board of Management, comprising of the trustees, one person nominated by the Board of Governors of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and three other members to be appointed by the trustees, one of whom must be a person of ordinary residence in one of the Virgin Islands, other than Tortola.
“The members of the Board of Management will be selected shortly and the Board fully constituted,” President Micheal stated. He also said the initial seed to constitute the trust fund is in the sum provided by his club.
The Rotary Club intends to host other activities to raise more funds for the trust.
Mr. Creque’s widow, Mrs. Emogene Creque, was invited to attend the Rotary luncheon, to witness the signing of the trust instrument and the formal creation and launching of the trust. Mrs. Creque, in her own right, is also a British Virgin Islander of distinction. She is one of the first females to start a business in the territory and the first female to serve as a Member of the Legislative Council.
Tracy Flax, eldest grandchild of the late Henry Osmond Creque, was on hand and expressed gratitude to the Rotary Club of Tortola on behalf of the family for this tribute.
