SHALYN THOMAS IS ANEGADA'S VALEDICTORIAN
Two graduating students of the Anegada Secondary School were awarded grade
one certificates at their graduation and prize giving ceremony at Emile E.
Dunlop Community Centre, Anegada on July 3rd.
Valedictorian, Miss Shalyn Thomas, received the trophy for Student of the
Year, donated by the Department of Education and Culture, the Hon. Reeial
George Trophy, Mr. and Mrs. Roosevelt Smith trophy for Mathematics, and the
Clair Aero and Mr. and Mrs. Neville Brathwaite and family trophy.
The Salutatorian, Mr. Daniel Vanterpool, received the Hon. Reeil George
trophy for Principles of Business and the Captain Ira Smith trophy for
English Language.
In addition, they received a laptop computer from the Government of the
British Virgin Islands.Principal of the Anegada Secondary School, Mrs. Claudia Creque in her
remarks told the graduates to remember the valuable qualities instilled in
them by their parents and teachers.
"Now that you are leaving home and family, you will be responsible for your
own actions. Be honest, trustworthy, kind-hearted and good mannered," she
said.
Mrs. Creque admonished them to put God first in their lives and strive in
his grace to become stalwart and honourable citizens of their country and
an asset to any institution or organisation they enter.Speaking on behalf of the Chief Minister, Permanent Secretary in the
Ministry of Education and Culture, Dr. Bryan Penn said the success rate of
the Secondary Division in Anegada clearly speaks to the commitment of the
principal and teachers.
He commended the teachers for the good work they did in nurturing the
students and said he was confident that they are prepared to accept the
challenges that lie ahead.
Directing his remarks to the graduates, Dr. Penn told them to resist all
negative influences and strive for excellence. "I urge you to totally
dedicate yourselves to learning as much as you can and doing whatever you
decide to do as well as you can," he said.
Acting Chief Education Officer, Dr. Quincy Lettsome in his remarks said
because Anegada is a small and closely netted community, its people has an
advantage to closely monitor the students most of the time.
Dr. Lettsome pointed out that over the years graduating students have been
small in number but they have performed commendably.
"This graduating class is also small but we are grateful for their
determination and perseverance which have brought them to their graduating
day, we are quite sure that this small beginning today will make a great
end in the future," he said.The keynote speaker was the Registrar of Companies, Mrs. Myrna Herbert who
was born on Anegada.
