Illegal Immigrants Apprehended off VG

Pictured here are sixteen illegal immigrants apprehended during a joint
operation of the Drug Squad, Customs Department and the Police Marine Unit.

On 23 August police were informed that a suspicious vessel about 30
nautical miles east of Pajaro Point, Virgin Gorda was sighted. A 22 ft boat
about 1 mile off Burgess Point was intercepted shortly after and 18 illegal
immigrants were found on board the "Born to Glory".

The vessel was co-captained by Carter Jefferson Magloire and Jackie Lewis, both of Dominica. The vessel was escorted to the Police Marine Base, where all of the immigrants were taken into police custody.
According to the same police sources the co-captains appeared in the
Magistrate's Court on 27 August and were charged jointly for assisting 16
illegal immigrants to land in the British Virgin Islands without leave from
the Immigration authorities. The Magistrate imposed a jail sentence of one
year each at Her Majesty's Prison.
