Old Government House to become tourist
attraction
Executive Council (ExCo) has examined options on how Old Government House
is going to be managed. According to Chief
Minister ONeal, the historic building will form a part of Government
House compound.
Old Government House should be managed by a Board or Committee appointed
by His Excellency the Governor after consultation
with the Executive Council. The Committee should include one representative
from each of the following organisations: the National
Parks Trust, the Virgin Islands Historical Society, the Virgin Islands
Studies Unit at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, the BVI
Tourist Board, and the Friends of Government House.
According to Mr. ONeal, ExCo has outlined that the Committee should
be empowered to raise funds, and maintain accounts and
staff. At that stage, Mr. ONeal said, it is hoped that Old Government
House would become a major tourist attraction.
The new Government House project will most likely get in motion in September
or shortly after when it will be tendered. Completion
is scheduled for late 2002 early 2003. The project is largely funded by
the BVI Government, with the United Kingdom contributing
some $800,000.
