BVI Youth Off To Germany For Expo 2000

Five youngsters from the BVI left here Sunday on an adventure to Germany. They will be attending "Expo 2000", a world exhibition that is taking place in Hannover.

The October 8th-22nd trip is sponsored by the Virgin Gorda Lions Club and the Lions District of Germany. The project was the brainchild of the late Klaus Wenzke, member of the Lions Club of Virgin Gorda and is continued in his honour by his widow Astrid. The delegation to Germany includes Daniel Vanterpool of Anegada, Hakim Creque of North Sound Virgin Gorda, Leslie Maduro of The Valley and Mia Wattley and Ivan Williams Jr. of Tortola. They were chosen from a field of several other youngsters, all between the ages of 16 and 26 years, who applied to take part in the programme. The group is being chaperoned by President of the Virgin Gorda Lions Club Sonia Joseph and escorted by the Project Coordinator Lion Astrid Wenzke.

They travelled to Germany via Antigua and London and were expected to be met in Hannover by District Governor/Immediate Past Lions Giesela Psoertner and other Lions. The first five days were spent in Hannover visiting Expo 2000. Throughout the entire period, the BVI students will spend time with different Lions families The group will then go by train to Berlin, the capital of Germany, spend a few days there staying in a youth hotel and spending the time with Lions members of Berlin. After Berlin, they will go to Bremen in northern Germany and stay on a training ship. The delegates carried for their hosts bags filled with the Early History of the BVI by Vernon Pickering, Pusser's Rum, a video of the BVI, literature on the financial, trade and tourism sectors of the BVI, stamps and other gifts.
