Chief Minister Endorses Legco 50th Anniversary Celebrations
As preparations for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the Legislative Council (LEGCO) continue, Chief Minister, Hon. Ralph T. O'Neal, is urging BV Islanders to be cognizant of the role the development of the Council has played in expanding the horizons of the territory.
"There has been great progress in the various fields-like the economic sector, the health sector (and) the education sector," he declared, while giving a synopsis of the history of LEGCO. “Our people have become more and more responsible. Many of our departments are now headed by British Virgin Islanders. "And as the services expand, so our people are also expanding," added Mr. O'Neal. He said that this is enough cause and that it would be in order for the current 14th Legislature and the rest of the territory to celebrate for a week. Activities have been scheduled for November 19 to 24 under the theme, "Empowerment through representation," starting with an interdemonational church service at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall and culminating in a ceremony honouring citizens of the BVI at the Maria's By The Sea Hotel. Some other highlights include commemorating the site of the first sitting of LEGCO in the BVI; honoring past and present members of the Council; an exhibition of the life of LEGCO from 1950 to 2000; a lecture on the evolution of legislative systems and alternative models for the millennium; a pageant by students of primary and secondary schools; and a cultural food fair and display. In conjunction with the Council, the Public Works Department on November 4 embarked on a 50th anniversary enhancement project to execute road works on Fishlock Road in the vicinity of the LEGCO Chanbers.
The undertaking, which will continue until November 19, includes construction of a turning lane, parking lot, sidewalk and planters. Mr. O'Neal is also encouraging all citizens of the BVI to be involved in the celebrations.
