Sexual Molestation Incidents more than doubled in 2000 A large number of reports of sexual offences committed against women, particularly incidents of statutory rape committed against girls between the ages of 11 to 15, have been made to the Family & Juvenile Department of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force since the beginning of this year. Police sources indicated that the reports of sexual offences have more than doubled when compared to the previous year. Police statistics have showed that out of 23 cases, sixteen girls under the age of 16 years have been reportedly sexually assaulted while seven cases related to indecent assault offences. Police Commissioner Vernon E. Malone, commented that he is quite satisfied with the quick and serious approach by detectives. According to the Commissioner, detectives have arrested at least 17 alleged offenders. Four of those offenders are currently remanded at Her Majesty's Prisons awaiting trial while two persons have been sentenced to serve between three and seven years in jail as the others are out on bail awaiting trial. Commissioner Malone also said that the Crime Prevention Department has been conducting public meetings in the schools, at Parent Teachers Association meetings and in the local churches to spread the message that: 1. sexual molestation against women and young girls is a serious matter; 2. the police are sensitive to the cries of women, particularly children under the legal age of 16 years, and are determined to arrest and prosecute any person responsible for these crimes; 3. the police will continue discussions among children on the subject of "good touch....bad touch"; 4. together we can make a difference to combat these incidents. The Commissioner wishes to encourage organizations, social group or concerned citizens who need to have additional information on this subject to feel free to contact the Department of the Family & Juvenile or the Police Crime Prevention Unit. |
