Former Educators Honoured At
Education Week Thanksgiving Ceremony

Noted former educators Ms. Isabella Morris and Mrs. Clover Anthony were honoured during the Thanksgiving Service that opened Education Week 2000 Sunday at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall. Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Health, Education and Welfare the Hon. Eileen L. Parsons recalled her days both as a pupil of "Teacher Issy," as Miss Morris is affectionately known, and as a colleague when she herself became a teacher. "Miss Morris has seen this country grow in education from the Methodist School at Zion Hill to the High School and the College." Mrs. Parsons said she hopes "Teacher Issy" will make it to her 100th birthday. Miss Morris is 99 years old. Mrs. Parsons noted Mrs. Anthony's contribution to the development of art and craft in the BVI. Mrs. Anthony taught home economics and needlecraft at the secondary school, now the BVI High School, for several years. Mrs. Parsons said Mrs. Anthony is an expert in straw work and worked with her at the Territory's first factory, a crochet slipper-making facility, where she would examine the straw bags in which the slippers were placed before being exported. Education Week activities continue with a seminar and a panel discussion focusing on gender issues in education, and the annual Inter-Primary Sports day that will take place this Thursday. The week will culminate with the third annual Teacher of the Year Awards Banquet scheduled for this Saturday at the Treasure Isle Hotel. Tickets, which are $30, are still available from the department of Education and Culture. For more information, interested persons may call the Department at 494-3701, ext. 2151.
