BVI issues stamps saluting the 100th Birthday of H.M. The Queen Mother
The British Virgin Islands Postal Administration released on 4th August, 2000 a set of four stamps to commemorate the 100th Birthday of H.M. The Queen Mother. The Queen Mother has appeared on BVI stamps on a number of occasions, beginning in 1937 for the Coronation of her husband, King George VI. Other local stamps featuring her were issued in 1949 for the Royal Silver Wedding, in 1985 for her 85th birthday, and in 1990 for her 90th birthday. The Royal Family is celebrating other significant birthdays during the year 2000: The Duke of York (Prince Andrew) celebrated his 40th on 19 February; The Princess Royal (Princess Anne) will be 50 this month (15 August) and Princess Margaret will be 70 on 21 August. Description of the new BVI Stamps: 15 cents - This stamp features a photograph of the then Duchess of York taken in the 1920s 35 cents - This stamp features a photograph of H.M. The Queen Mother taken in 1957. 70 cents - This stamp features a photograph of H.M. The Queen Mother taken in 1970. $1.50 - This stamp features a photograph of H.M. The Queen Mother taken on her 99th Birthday. The new set, part of a Commonwealth-wide omnibus series, features photographs from Alpha, London; the stamps were printed by The House of Questa by Lithography; Stamp Size: - 31.75mm x 31.75mm; Sheet Format: 50 (2x25); Perforation Gauge: 14 per 2 cms; Paper: CA Spiral Old OBA Free. The stamps will remain on sale at the General Post Office Road Town, and the Branch Post Offices at East End and West End, Tortola and the Valley Virgin Gorda until 3rd February, 2001 or until stocks are exhausted. The stamps will be available at the B.V.I. Philatelic Bureau for a longer period.
